Fishing Report 6/01/25
Hello from the Canyon! It’s been too long and it’s time to let you know the status of our favorite river.
Our Spring is coming to an end as Summer warmth is starting to embrace us. We’ve had outstanding spring fishing. The nymphing has been very good and consistent. Several patterns have been working just as well as any. The key is weight and depth. Adjust until you catch, then repeat. Some go deep in the ditch, some go light and shallow when the mayfly nymphs are emerging. We’ve been going back and forth. It’s fun to try different techniques and find success in each. We suggest you do too.
Right now we have the beginning of the Pale Morning Dun hatch in the mornings through early afternoon. Baetis are still an afternoon staple. If you are looking to fish dry PMD’s, target the lower river. Think Dearborn to Cascade. The upper river has a few fish looking for the big duns, but you will find a little more consistency in the lower river. Cloudy afternoons find fish up on Baetis throughout the river. That’s still the primary hatch, but that is changing quickly. PMD’s are on the verge of domination.
Streamer fishing this spring has been inconsistent at best, but that is also changing. It gets better daily. Throw in a cloudy, stormy afternoon and it’s on the verge of addicting. Warmer water=active fish willing to chase.
A few random things….
The fish in the Canyon section seem to be much bigger this year. Very close to the size average of the upper river fish. Also, we are getting a higher percentage of Brown trout in this section this season.
We haven’t seen a lull in the fishing between the Baetis and PMD hatch this season. The fishing has remained quite consistent. Last year that was not the case. There was about a week that it was tough between the two hatches.
Starting to see some of those evening caddis…
We’ve been busy at the lodge. Growing, making changes, improving.
New fly shop/locker room incoming. We’ll do a blog about when it arrives.
New fire pit for those gorgeous Montana nights!
New Orvis association!
New gear!
If you are coming this season, you’ll see it soon. If not, we hope you see it in the future.
Cheers!
